Giving Back and Helping Others

This past year has proved challenging for everyone around the globe, so it is important to remember during these isolating times, how possible it is to help one another by giving your time, your knowledge, and your energy towards something positive!

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his selfless service, “Gangsta Gardner” Ron Finley is hosting a free online event through Perdue University spotlighting how food scarcity can effect all of us, and what we can proactively do to change our micro-environments, wherever we live!

We couldn’t love Ron’s message any harder! We are excitedly waiting for this talk to happen, and we hope you will join us online.

Sign up soon! Registration for this event will close at 9am EST on Jan. 18.

Guerilla Gardening

If you have never heard of Ron Finley before, we highly suggest you take a listen to his inspiring TED Talk!

When the city of Los Angeles tried to shut down his humble, curbside vegetable garden, Finley’s fight against the municipality gave voice to a larger movement that now provides nourishment, empowerment, education -- and healthy, hopeful futures -- one urban garden at a time.

Take me to the TED Talk, now!

Igniting a Horticultural Revolution

The Ron Finley Project wants to educate communities to embrace the act of growing, knowing, and sharing the best homegrown food, regardless of location and financial situation.

There is a gardener in everyone, and Ron is willing to teach others how to grow their community through growing a garden.

"Everyone can be great because everybody can serve." - MLK

Not a gardener? We get that too. It’s not for everybody!

Here are some other ways that you can contribute in a “green” way to helping and serving others in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:

  • Visit the AmeriCorps site to find a volunteer opportunity near you.

  • Beautify your community! Clean up a park, the road you live on, or an abandoned space from debris or litter.

  • Take a hike! Volunteer your time for your local township park or a state park!

  • Assist the elderly or others in need of assistance with their sidewalk clearing, walkways, or yard maintenance.

  • Get outside and walk! Volunteer your time at a local animal shelter to walk animals and take care of their socialization needs.
